Tell Me I Can’t Poem

Writer: Jill AnthonyJill Anthony

Look me in the eye

and tell me I can’t

I’ll prove you wrong

with a lifelong rant

Did I want it

in the first place?

Or get caught up

in a rat race?

You planted a seed

unleashed uncertainty and doubt

which ignited a flame

caused ambition to sprout

Now I’m committed

to this journey

Locked and loaded

on a gurney

You can try to hold me down

I sure as hell won’t drown

Grant me grace

in this space

through this life

full of strife

Time to pivot

Make a choice

Dig down deep

Use my voice

What does my heart

long to chase?

Why am I so scared

to embrace?

Grab my courage

Feel my thunder

Take a step

into wonder

Tell me I can’t

and watch me try

Doubt me

you’ll see me fly

What's crazy is that I can be pursuing something ... only to realize I'm doing it because someone told me I couldn't. Then I have to actually ask myself, "Do you want to do this?!" The answer is not always, "yes"!!
